Keeping Your Windshield Wipers in Good Working Condition

windshield wipers

One thing is for sure—if you can’t see, you can’t drive. Driving around the streets of Red Oak or anywhere in the DFW Metroplex requires good vision and a clear windshield! This is where the importance of good windshield wipers comes in. Most of us tend to wait till the last minute to change our windshield wiper blades and don’t realize it until we’re caught in a thunderstorm with pouring down rain, or maybe have a thousand bugs on the glass that you can’t get off. If your windshield is just plain dirty, you may go to squirt some windshield wiper fluid only to realize that too is empty, so all the old blades do is smear what’s already on the glass making it even worse. What to do!

Car Care Tips:  Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are like all other car parts—they need some TLC and they need regular maintenance and replacement. A good rule of thumb for this preventive maintenance is to replace your wipers is twice a year.  Spring and fall are great times to plan on doing it, although if the winter is particularly rough, there are special winter windshield wiper blades you can buy as well. They are designed to be resistant to freezing rain and snow, making them glide much more easily if there is ice on your glass.

Having said that, remember this tip too: Don’t use your wipers to try and clear away snow and ice. The little wiper motor that allows the wipers to function and run back and forth could be easily damaged and the rubber strips will wear out much faster too.

Under normal conditions, the wipers themselves will corrode and wear out over time. You usually can tell this has begun to happen when you go to use them and you can’t get a clean wipe. Perhaps you get a huge streak in one area. You can try wiping off the rubber blade and see if that helps. If not, it’s likely that the blades have just begun to break down. Keep in mind that worn out wiper blades not only are ineffective, but also damaging to the glass on your windshield. They should be replaced immediately.

Our friendly crew at Castrol Express Car Service will be happy to help you determine if it’s time to replace your windshield wipers, and even put them on for you—yeah, we’re that nice! Just remember, they won’t cost you any more than they would at any other store and we will always provide the replacement at no cost.

While you’re here, let us check and top off your fluids so you don’t have to worry about needing that when it only squirts a few drops at best. Seems like that always happens when you need it most! For good measure, let us go ahead and change your oil too, which only takes a few minutes. An extra tip is to keep some of the vital fluids for your car at home in case you need extra. This is a great idea if you’re going to be traveling long distances! It never hurts to carry some extra oil, windshield washer fluid and coolant.

Our final tip is to remember that your car may have two separate fluid reservoirs. One for the front windshield and another for the back. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to use plain water to clean your windshields or to keep in your reservoir. Don’t mix in standard household glass cleaner either. None of these things are designed to stand up to extreme temperatures and water alone will not give your glass a streak-free cleaning that you need in order to feel safe on the streets of Ellis County.
